A quick snap shot

I am currently doing some research for a new jewelry line I am making. Lucky for me I get to trawl through tons of incredible photos of all my favourite old “Big Screen” movie stars (hard work, really!)
Amongst the gems I have collected on my Vintage board on Pinterest I rediscovered this gorgeous photo – I adore Audrey’s effortless elegance, even when touching up her makeup.

Desmond & Toni

Being surrounded by creativity and talent is never something you should take for granted. Lucky for us we live in a street full of inspiring and amazing people. We have film production folk, jewelers, art restorers, designers and amazing photographers. Desmond and Toni are our immediate neighbors, they are both super talented photographers.

Desmond and Toni

Recently I had to have some proper profile photos taken of myself for a Fairlady feature on BlogGirls. Yikes, the only pictures I have of me were taken (very reluctantly) on a cellphone camera and involve a very unflattering pose with my hair in a mess and bags under my eyes. I prefer snapping than being snapped.

Desmond and Toni

Lucky for me, Toni read my desperate tweet for photographic assistance and before I knew it Desmond and Toni came to my rescue. In spite of the weather being really horrid and rain threatening to fizz up my newly flat ironed red barnet, the photos came out amazingly. Desmond and Toni have an uncanny ability to capture moments so naturally and elegantly. Their gentle natures and unassuming personalities automatically made me feel comfortable, not an easy feat as I HATE having my photo taken. Well after just a half and hour and a few dozen snaps I was done (and I felt like a super star) Who would have thought… I could actually look respectable?

Desmond and Toni run a very successful photography collaboration (check out their website), with weddings being their obvious show stopper. Desmond is also a very keen petrol head and takes really sexy automotive pics.

When Desmond isn’t relaxing with a fresh brew, he is sure to be snapping shots with his iPhone or skating the back streets. Toni is a gorgeous German lass, who’s charm and warmth would put the most nervous of brides/anxious bloggers at ease. She has a contagious creative energy and is very passionate about Cape Town (embarrassingly knowing more about this town than most of us locals do!) The couple live with Piccolo, the super slinky Italian Greyhound.

Thanks Desmond and Toni for being miracle workers. I love my photos and am so chuffed to have you guys as neighbors.

X-Ray flowers

I found these beautiful photos a while back and keep meaning to post about them They are a series of floral studies using X-rays. To quote the photographer who created these whimsical pieces: “I love both it’s stillness and it’s dynamism.” Please take a look at more of Brendan Fitzpatrick’s Photography he is a clever chap.

Little People Project

Slinkachu has been abandoning little people in the streets since 2006.
His miniature scenes are created using remodeled train set people. He carefully places them in real life scenes and then photographs them up close and from a distance. Slinkachu likes to think of his street art as being subtle and sensitive, “I want people to be able to empathise with the tiny people in my works.”

Slinkachu is also famous for other imaginative forms of ephemeral art such as his Inner City Snail “A slow-moving street art project”. He creates teeny tiny graffiti tags (using non-toxic paint of course) on the shells of snails and then releases them into the urban wild, photographing them as they charge off.

Dogs underwater

Everyone knows dogs love playing with balls and most of them like water, now combine these three and you have the ingredients for some really amazing photos. Seth Casteel from Little Friends Photo really has managed to capture the sheer brilliance of being a dog. Seth is a very talented photographer and his work has been featured on EXTRA, MSNBC, USA Today, The Today Show, ABC News, AOL, CBS News, JEOPARDY! and PerezHilton.com.

Okay yes, the last shot is of a cat, but hey, my house mate is a cat and I couldn’t resist. Needless to say Seth also takes some pretty fabulous photos of cats too.

Flat white

Do you have days where you see or taste or feel a common colour throughout your day?
Monday has been a white day for me.
You see, today we took the first step in our long planned for home renovation. As a result I was completely house bound, being totally restricted to working from our dining room.

Our little house was filled with contractors who where converting our roof area into storage. They spent the entire day drilling, sawing, hammering and stapeling. All very loudly and all while traipsing dust and wood chips through our home (eek!)
Thankfully its all done now. The chaps cleaned up (sort of) and then showed me how to pull down the fancy ladder, I signed some papers and off they went in their little van.

Job done.

Yippee, we now have a smart new storage space. Ironically its lined with a smart white dust cloth so it looks quite pristine and crisp up there. Negotiating the pull down ladder is a little awkward but I will get the hang of it. I can’t wait to get up there and start sorting and packing away stuff. What a blessing it is to have this white tent in the sky.

So yes, today has been a white Monday. White is such a clean and comforting colour to me. It promises renewal and offers a quiet space for thought. It refreshes and inspires me, I love it.

Having taken the first step in my renovation journey, white best represents my frame of mind at the moment. I feel content and contemplative, but at the same time positive and optimistic about all our future reno’ plans.

People and their pets

Are two thirds of the photos on your phone of your pet?
My friends run screaming when I want to show them a photo from my phone. They know its going to be at least 20 minutes before they can free themselves from the tractor beam I have locked on them.

I can’t help it, I love my cat and I love taking photos of her, she is after all the cutest cat in the entire universe.

Well at least I am not alone – seems that through the ages people have gone to a lot of trouble to immortalise their beloved pets (even permitting their kids to smoke cigars while doing so…)

All of these photos can be found on my Pinterest board (they come from various sources, some of which are not clear)

Spring has sprung

Today is the beginning of a new season and a new start for all. Here is hoping your spring is filled with the warmth of the rediscovered sunshine, the freshness of distant breezes, the indulgence of intoxicating flowers and the dreams of long forgotten afternoon naps.

Pictured here is a Hummingbird moth, Macroglossum stellatarum, enjoying a snack on a sprig of lavender.

Happy Spring Day

Red Flower

The weather has taken a turn for the worse. Saturday saw Cape Town experience one of the worst storms in a long while and on Sunday it hailed! You would never guess that a couple of weeks ago the sun baked down on our little garden making flowers bloom and buds turn green.
Since getting my new camera I cant resist photographing everything that happens in the garden – in the nick of time Alexis grabbed a fist full of the hail before it melted.
