Apologies for falling off the radar entirely – seems that a platoon of nasty germs have set up camp in my sinuses and have managed to convert most of my head (brain included) into snot! Seriously… where does all this liquid come from?

Oh well, I promise to get back into things as soon as these nasty critters move base camp and I can breath again.

I spotted a gorgeous pair of neon pink drop earrings at a shop at the V&A Waterfront. Of course it was way too expensive for my likings, but it got me thinking. Surely I could make my own? I had bought the most amazing neon pink spray paint from Shelf Life in Bree Street (Cape Town) and was itching to spray stuff with it, so naturally this DIY project would be the perfect task. Here is how I did it.

Tools needed:
Pair of inexpensive drop earrings (these are from Mr Price)
Neon pink spray paint
Old newspaper

The Process:
Step 1: Cover all work surfaces in the newspaper.
Step 2: Cover the posts of your earrings with a little tape (so as to prevent the paint from adhering)
Step 3: Spray your earrings with the crazy neon paint. Remembering to use lots of light coats. Leave each coat to dry thoroughly before applying another – this will make the finish much neater.
Step 4: Leave to dry completely.

Voila – you have a super glamorous pair of killer neon pink drop earrings!

When I was studying photography at Tech (back in the olden days) we where taught how to do double exposures using film. It was/is a simple technique involving taking two under exposed photos in one frame. Simple but relatively hit and miss – sometimes you got amazing compositions, but most of the time is was rubbish.

Nowadays, achieving the same magical effect would require a fiddly long exposure (which sounds too complicated for me) or possibly merging two photos in Photoshop. However, if you are lucky enough to own a really fancy camera (like the Canon 5D Mark III) then you can do the whole double exposure technique on your camera. Lucky sausages!! Sadly my Canon is not quite that fancy, so any ideas of creating crazy double images will have have to be dependent on my Photoshop skills.

If you are one of those fortunate folk in pocession of a fancy pants camera, then you should watch this tutorial by Sara Byrne. Sara explains how to go about creating gorgeous double exposures much like the ones she did below. Her technique is simple, but the end result is simply breathe taking. Monday mornings can be very overwhelming, what with a blur of meetings, project goals and looming deadlines, things always seem mad. I find it helps to sit down with a cup of tea and plan my week ahead, on paper. Somehow, writing things down, prioritising work and scheduling “other” stuff (like laundry and grocery shopping), makes me feel a little more balanced and in control.
