Bird Song

Just a quick post to show off my new camera. I haven’t had enough time to really play with it, but this afternoon I had a very shy but sweet model. Meet Cass, she and her little husband Roll, visit our garden most afternoons, they love to scratch around in the autumn leaves looking for seeds and other delicious dove treats.

Belguim photographer Emilie Vercruysse has a brilliant style – her kids photos have a familiar vintage feel, a little reminiscent of the old sewing and knitting pattern books my Mum used to collect. I love the colours and daft use of props.
Check out more of her work here.

Kate Moss in the Ritz Paris

The sheer sophistication and elegance of the Ritz in Paris is legendary – the perfect setting for a breathtaking look at the latest haute couture as worn by Kate Moss (and photographed for Vogue by Tim Walker)
Have a look at the Vogue website for more of the shoot.

Thanks to the lovely Romy from Riya Bella Vintage Blog for the original link I saw.

I think my favourite gown is the Giamattista Valli (photo where Kate Moss is precariously balanced on a mantelpiece).
The description from the Vogue website is so appropriate: “Giambattista Valli sent out a cinched draped-shoulder goddess dress in ‘a color so deep, so intense, you can almost smell it—like bougainvillea on the Mediterranean coast’.”

A quick snap shot

I am currently doing some research for a new jewelry line I am making. Lucky for me I get to trawl through tons of incredible photos of all my favourite old “Big Screen” movie stars (hard work, really!)
Amongst the gems I have collected on my Vintage board on Pinterest I rediscovered this gorgeous photo – I adore Audrey’s effortless elegance, even when touching up her makeup.

A recipe for the perfect cherry pie

Cherry Pie
Cherry Pie

I have always had a crazy love for typography. I suppose it began while studying Graphic Design at the old Cape Tech. Apart from learning all the theory behind typography we also had to recreate entire font families, by hand!
Nuts, I know, but a vital step in the true appreciation of well set type. Computers and graphics programs simply cannot space letters as well as the human eye, its about feeling the white space around the letters and making it work.
Nothing irritates me more than seeing badly kerned lettering. There simply isnt an excuse for it – it’s just laziness.

Hand lettering is a craft which I am so pleased to see is currently experiencing a huge revival. Being very inspired by ascenders and descenders, kerning and leading, I have hauled out my old drawing pens and note pad, in an enthused attempt to start font doodling again. Thanks to my dear husband, Alexis, who gave me a copy of “Just My Type” by Simon Garfield for my birthday, I really do feel armed to make the most of this artistic whim (so watch this space).

On another note, they say you eat with your eyes first, well if you could make the actual recipe you are reading just as delicious as the dish you intend baking, then you are onto something truly magical.

Inspired by hand lettered chalk boards, Leanda from One Little Bird Studio manages to make your mouth water while reading her Cherry Pie recipe. Her blog is equally as gorgeous, filled with beautiful colours, inspirational posts and fantastic typography (serious blog crush material).

The scrumptious Cherry Pie photos are from another glorious blog you have to visit, Raspberri Cupcakes, but be warned, you may gain a dress size just drooling over Steph’s delicious photographs. This woman knows how to cook!

Desmond & Toni

Being surrounded by creativity and talent is never something you should take for granted. Lucky for us we live in a street full of inspiring and amazing people. We have film production folk, jewelers, art restorers, designers and amazing photographers. Desmond and Toni are our immediate neighbors, they are both super talented photographers.

Desmond and Toni

Recently I had to have some proper profile photos taken of myself for a Fairlady feature on BlogGirls. Yikes, the only pictures I have of me were taken (very reluctantly) on a cellphone camera and involve a very unflattering pose with my hair in a mess and bags under my eyes. I prefer snapping than being snapped.

Desmond and Toni

Lucky for me, Toni read my desperate tweet for photographic assistance and before I knew it Desmond and Toni came to my rescue. In spite of the weather being really horrid and rain threatening to fizz up my newly flat ironed red barnet, the photos came out amazingly. Desmond and Toni have an uncanny ability to capture moments so naturally and elegantly. Their gentle natures and unassuming personalities automatically made me feel comfortable, not an easy feat as I HATE having my photo taken. Well after just a half and hour and a few dozen snaps I was done (and I felt like a super star) Who would have thought… I could actually look respectable?

Desmond and Toni run a very successful photography collaboration (check out their website), with weddings being their obvious show stopper. Desmond is also a very keen petrol head and takes really sexy automotive pics.

When Desmond isn’t relaxing with a fresh brew, he is sure to be snapping shots with his iPhone or skating the back streets. Toni is a gorgeous German lass, who’s charm and warmth would put the most nervous of brides/anxious bloggers at ease. She has a contagious creative energy and is very passionate about Cape Town (embarrassingly knowing more about this town than most of us locals do!) The couple live with Piccolo, the super slinky Italian Greyhound.

Thanks Desmond and Toni for being miracle workers. I love my photos and am so chuffed to have you guys as neighbors.

X-Ray flowers

I found these beautiful photos a while back and keep meaning to post about them They are a series of floral studies using X-rays. To quote the photographer who created these whimsical pieces: “I love both it’s stillness and it’s dynamism.” Please take a look at more of Brendan Fitzpatrick’s Photography he is a clever chap.

Little People Project

Slinkachu has been abandoning little people in the streets since 2006.
His miniature scenes are created using remodeled train set people. He carefully places them in real life scenes and then photographs them up close and from a distance. Slinkachu likes to think of his street art as being subtle and sensitive, “I want people to be able to empathise with the tiny people in my works.”

Slinkachu is also famous for other imaginative forms of ephemeral art such as his Inner City Snail “A slow-moving street art project”. He creates teeny tiny graffiti tags (using non-toxic paint of course) on the shells of snails and then releases them into the urban wild, photographing them as they charge off.

Dogs underwater

Everyone knows dogs love playing with balls and most of them like water, now combine these three and you have the ingredients for some really amazing photos. Seth Casteel from Little Friends Photo really has managed to capture the sheer brilliance of being a dog. Seth is a very talented photographer and his work has been featured on EXTRA, MSNBC, USA Today, The Today Show, ABC News, AOL, CBS News, JEOPARDY! and PerezHilton.com.

Okay yes, the last shot is of a cat, but hey, my house mate is a cat and I couldn’t resist. Needless to say Seth also takes some pretty fabulous photos of cats too.

Goodness me, the Christmas holidays have come and gone and 2012 is well under way.

I have been on a glorious break from the digital world. My days have been spent relaxing with my beloved husband, eating too much, sleeping too late and generally enjoying the good life. We have also been very busy with my latest decorating project. Alison and Rob (my sister and brother-in-law) are about to become the proud parents of twins and in the excitement of realizing I was about to become an Aunt I volunteered to decorate the nursery.

It has been an amazing experience, we transformed a manilla colored guest bedroom into a gorgeous grey and white baby room. It’s a light and airy room, punctuated with pops of bright yellow and framed beautifully with bold white stripes. (photos in the pipeline)

The babies are expected to arrived next Monday (yippee) so there is much excitement in our family. My poor Mum can bearly contain herself (it’s her first adventure into grandparenthood) and I too can hardly wait – my new niece and nephew are going to be so spoilt. Finally Mum and I have legitimate excuses to coo at cute baby clothes.

Then to add to the New Year’s excitement I am having Lasik surgery tomorrow. After wearing glasses (and later contact lenses) since I was 11 years old, I decided to take the plunge and ditch the frames. Tomorrow I go under the knife (or laser) and hopefully a miracle will be performed. Apparently its a fairly routine procedure, but the prospect of being able to see it all happen is a still super frightening. I will be out of action for around a week and after that I intend getting back into work and normal life (sans the specs)

So here is wishing you all the most wonderful 2012, I hope its a year filled with smiles and adventure and doing what you do best.

Christmas Candy Canes

We have just put up our Christmas tree and finally a festive feeling has set in.
Each year I try to do something different with my present wrapping, this year I have settled on plain white paper with pretty red ribbon tied in a bow and finished off with a handmade gift tag and a candy cane.
Looking for references I put this inspiration board together. I love the fresh, almost minty clean colours. Happy wrapping!.
