Design Indaba Expo 2014

After yet another super busy week, it was so lovely to peacefully meander around this year’s Design Indaba Expo and soak in all the great talent on show. Each year that goes by I am always impressed with the volume of fabulous goodies on display and the amazing talent that is out there.

Naturally I was tempted to spend all the money I had burning a hole in my wallet, but I showed restraint and only landed up bagging two gifts for two fortunate mates (and nothing for me!)
If you get a chance, get down to the CTICC and see what’s out there – but be warned, it gets pretty busy, so try to get there early. (Oh and you have to try the Bubble Tea – I had my fist one yesterday and it was weirdly very, very refreshing!)

Here are a few highlights from the Expo.

On my Christmas wish list: An embroidered kitty shirt

Dear Father Christmas – please, please, please can I also have a purrfectly crisp white linen shirt embroidered by Hiroko Kubota. Thanks so much – xxx

Apparently these amazing shirts were first made for Hiroko Kubota’s cat obsessed son. Kubota is a Japanese embroidery artist who’s talents are being snapped up as her gorgeous shirts sell like hot cakes. You can see more of her photos here and check out her Etsy shop here.

So adorable – I am in love!

Orla Kiely – Autumn & Winter 2013

Very often when new collections are released the folk that inhabit the opposite half of the globe (that’s me) are in no mood to appreciate the already long drawn out season that the other half are about to embrace. Well Orla Kiely’s new Autum/Winter 2013 Collection is perhaps an exception. This season sees lots of great vintage inspired “twin sets”, piled high with gorgeous textures, great motifs and warm colours. So pretty and so easily mixed and matched.
I have picked a few of my favorites below – you can see the whole collection here.

Make Your Own Neon Pink Earrings

DIY - make your own neon pink earings

I spotted a gorgeous pair of neon pink drop earrings at a shop at the V&A Waterfront. Of course it was way too expensive for my likings, but it got me thinking. Surely I could make my own? I had bought the most amazing neon pink spray paint from Shelf Life in Bree Street (Cape Town) and was itching to spray stuff with it, so naturally this DIY project would be the perfect task. Here is how I did it.

Tools needed:
Pair of inexpensive drop earrings (these are from Mr Price)
Neon pink spray paint
Old newspaper

The Process:
Step 1: Cover all work surfaces in the newspaper.
Step 2: Cover the posts of your earrings with a little tape (so as to prevent the paint from adhering)
Step 3: Spray your earrings with the crazy neon paint. Remembering to use lots of light coats. Leave each coat to dry thoroughly before applying another – this will make the finish much neater.
Step 4: Leave to dry completely.

Voila – you have a super glamorous pair of killer neon pink drop earrings!

Spring Flowers

Dont fret – yes, the seasons are changing and yes, the idea of fluffy socks, wood fires and hot chocolate is looking more and more apprealing, but it’s not all that bad. You can still enjoy a little spring magic with the latest in floral spring trends.

Ruven Afanador took these magical photos for the latest edition of Town and Country, featuring outfits from Dior, Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta and more. So pretty.

I love the Easter Bunny

It’s that time of the year again – the smell of toasted hot cross buns is common place around tea time and the idea of a chocolate induced comma is not that far off. Easter – I love you!

What are your family traditions? Do they involve egg hunts and wearing silly bunny ears? Or are you just going to relax with family and friends and enjoy the last bits of our glorious summer?

What ever you plan to do, have a glorious weekend.

PS. J’aime le Lapin de Pâques is French for I love the Easter Bunny (cute hey?)

Summer wardrobe

This summer I am determined to wear more dresses and skirts (to spite riding a scooter). I spotted these amazing frocks designed by Tucker designer Gaby Basora. I love the bright colours and crazy patterns, neatly blended together in a nostalgic 70’s vibe. Apparently Gaby was inspired by a novel she was reading at the time of designing the Spring 2013 collection – David Hajdu’s Positively 4th Street, a biography about Bob Dylan and the Baez sisters.
Well, whatever the fuel was for her latest collection it turned out gorgeously. See the rest here.

More early Christmas shopping

September is here and we are slowly creeping closer to Christmas, so here is part two of my Christmas shopping list (see the first installment here)

All these beauties can be found on the glorious Hello Pretty website – BUT BE WARNED – this site may cause a serious case of the vapors! I keep spotting things that take my breath away – I must have them all!

Hello Pretty is constantly being updated with gorgeous new goodies, all perfect for wrapping and putting under the tree (yes, I know its early, but I am on mission to get the horrid task done before the maddening crowd).

Oh and don’t forget to stop at the Pretty Pretty shop, there are some cute stocking fillers for guys and girls
